  • Course 1: 8am - 12pm (4 Contact Hours)- Ethical Use of Modalities ** (limited enrollment)
  • The ethical use of modalities will address a number of topics involved in the appropriate use of Biophysical Technologies. A number of modalities are not reimbursable, yet may still help our patients. These technologies such as laser, heat, and cryotherapy will be addressed. The latest research exploring these interventions will be brought to light. Another ethical dilemma is the use of biophysical technologies whose efficacy is not fully supported by the scientific literature. The evidence base of modalities such as ultrasound will be explored and appropriate use of these interventions will be discussed.

Andy has received research grants from the National Institute of Health, the American Heart Association, and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

  • Course 2: 8am - 4pm (6 Contact Hours)- Gait Training for Patients With Stroke©
  • In 2004, stroke was the third leading cause of death, killing 150,147 people, which was one of every 16 deaths (American Heart Association, 2007). If rehabilitation is an option for stroke survivors, then therapists must be able to provide patient focused care in acute care; subacute and inpatient rehab; day rehab, outpatient, and home health. Research indicates that in inpatient rehabilitation "The largest percentage of time in physical therapy sessions was spent on gait activities" (Jette, et al., Physical Therapy, 2005; 85(3): 238-248, p. 241). However, not every patient will be able to receive inpatient rehabilitation. This course is designed to provide participants with current knowledge and skills to improve gait in the patient with neurological impairment as a result of stroke. Abnormal gait patterns will be reviewed. Therapeutic interventions will address primarily the trunk and lower extremity transitioning from sitting to completing one gait cycle. Specific treatment interventions that can be used in acute care across the continuum to home health to alleviate antalgic gait patterns will be discussed and demonstrated via media and therapist interaction for practical application to persons with stroke. Participants: PTs and PTAs. Course Level: Intermediate - Assumes that participants have a general familiarity with topic (normal phases of gait). The focus is on increased understanding and application therapeutic interventions to alleviate abnormal gait patterns.

  • Course 4: 8am - 4pm (6 Contact Hours)- Gray Institute Presents: The Functional Knee
  • The knee has very important biomechanical functions, many which are expressed during upright tasks such as walking, stepping, lunging, shuffling, squatting, etc. Functionally, these movements rarely occur independent of movement at other joints of the lower limb. The strong functional association throughout the lower limb is reflected by the fact that most muscles that cross the knee also cross the hip or ankle. Stability of the knee is based primarily on the soft tissue constraints rather than its bony configuration. Knowledge of the anatomy and function of the knee is an essential prerequisite to the proper application of techniques. To assist in this we will share a principle, strategy, technique process thus empowering you to assess and address integrated knee function. This innovative one-day seminar will provide participants with essential principles, strategies and techniques of Applied Functional Science and encourages direct participation and interaction with the instructor and participants to enhance the ability to assess and address patient function. During this course you will learn a principle based approach to creating strategies for assessment/testing, prevention, training and rehab to facilitate improved functional thresholds. This class is designed for all health professionals and applies to all patient populations.
