Clinical Education SIG News

The APTA Education Leadership Conference (ELC) was held in Phoenix, AZ October 6-9, 2016. This annual conference provides programming and activities that serve all leaders, clinicians, and educators interested in the pursuit of excellence in physical therapy education. In an attempt to maintain a strong clinical education voice within our profession, the National Consortium of Clinical Educators (NCCE) was formed about two years ago. Membership in the NCCE includes PT program representatives (typically the Directors of Clinical Education or Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education) and a clinical member partnered with each PT program. The Wisconsin clinical members are Center Coordinators of Clinical Education (CCCEs) and clinical instructors (CIs) in the state of Wisconsin who are also members of the WPTA Clinical Education Special Interest Group (CESIG). The Wisconsin NCCE members include:

  • Carrol University: Kathy Shields, PT, MS; Sara North, PT, DPT; Dianne Isnard, PT
  • Concordia University Wisconsin: Lois Harrison, PT, DPT, MS; Andrea Vassev, MPT
  • Marquette University: Danille Parker, PT, MPT, DPT; Laurie Kontney, PT, DPT, MS; Alyssa Jacklin, PT, DPT
  • UW-La Crosse: Amy Taebel, PT, DPT; Doug Grovergrys, MPT
  • UW-Madison: Jeanne Duncan, PT, DPT; Michelle Suchomel, PT
  • UW-Milwaukee: Ann Dietrich, PT, MS; Chris Henning, PT

The clinical and academic members of the NCCE had an opportunity to attend educational programming at ELC, as well as voice opinions and concerns at forums directly related to clinical education. The WPTA CESIG supports the clinical members of the NCCE by providing funds to offset the costs associated with attending the conference. Some of the hot topics discussed at the conference included the creation of common student request for clinical placement forms, addressing the shortage of clinical placements, and training for clinical instructors/CCCEs. Attendance at ELC is one way the clinical voice can be heard in a national forum, and the NCCE and WPTA CESIG continue to look for other ways to strengthen and develop clinical education to best meet the needs of all stakeholders involved – clinical sites, academic programs, students and patients. One of the PT clinical members attending the conference had this to say… “I feel more connected to clinical education concerns and issues both at the state and national level. I appreciate the opportunity to contribute in this team approach to bettering our clinical education process.”

To learn more about, or to become involved, please consider joining the WPTA CESIG. Our next meeting will be held during WPTA Spring Conference. Please visit our link on the WPTA website at www.wpta.org, access the “SIGs” tab, then choose the “CESIG” link for details and available resources regarding clinical education.

Consistent with its mission to promote quality clinical education, The Wisconsin Clinical Education Special Interest Group (CESIG) is committed to providing financial support for clinical members to attend continuing education related to clinical education. To achieve this, funds will be designated each year to fund a $600.00 scholarship. This will be awarded to a clinician to support attendance at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting (CSM). Scholarship application is due by October 31st of the previous year.
